Day 1

Luke 10:25 (ESV)

[25] And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

Receiving Eternal Life: More Than a Checklist

When the expert in the law asked Jesus, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" (Luke 10:25), he wasn't seeking a list of religious rules to follow—he was testing Jesus and missing the heart of God's promise. Inheritance is not earned; it is given. Jesus directs him back to God's Word, revealing that the way to "life" is rooted not in performance, but in relationship—with God and others. The religious leaders of Jesus' day often blurred God's righteous standards into human achievement, yet Jesus reminds us that eternal life is God's gracious gift to be received by faith. Our inability to love God fully or our neighbor perfectly shows our need for Christ. Only through relationship with Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit, can we move beyond striving and embrace the abundant life God freely offers. Scripture teaches that salvation is a gift, not a reward for works, so we rest in God's love and respond to His call to love others as we have been loved.

Key Takeaway

Eternal life is received as a gift, not achieved, and leads us to love God and neighbor.

Questions to Consider

  1. Have you ever felt pressure to earn God's approval? What does Jesus' answer teach you?
  2. Why do you think Jesus connected eternal life with loving God and neighbor?
  3. How does trusting God's grace change your motivation toward others?
